            Richard  Baxter       Born:  Nov. 12, 1615 --- Died:  Dec. 8, 1691               Biography:   Wikipedia

   "The thoughts of the coming of the Lord," said Baxter, "are most sweet and joyful to me."-- Richard Baxter, Works, vol. 17, p. 555. "It is the work of faith and the character of His saints to love His appearing and to look for that blessed hope." "If death be the last enemy to be destroyed at the resurrection, we may learn how earnestly believers should  long and pray for the second coming of Christ, when this full and final conquest shall be made."-- Ibid., vol. 17, p. 500. "This is the day that all believers should long, and hope, and wait for, as being the accomplishment of all the work of their redemption, and all the desires and endeavors of their souls." "Hasten, O Lord, this blessed day!"-- Ibid., vol. 17, pp. 182, 183. Such was the hope of the apostolic church, of the "church in the wilderness," and of the Reformers.  Great Controversy, page 303.4  {Maranatha 14.4}

Baxter, Flavel, Alleine, and other men of talent, education, and deep Christian experience stood up in valiant defense of the faith which was once delivered to the saints. The work accomplished by these men, proscribed and outlawed by the rulers of this world, can never perish. Flavel's Fountain of Life and Method of Grace have taught thousands how to commit the keeping of their souls to Christ. Baxter's Reformed Pastor has proved a blessing to many who desire a revival of the work of God, and his Saints' Everlasting Rest has done its work in leading souls to the "rest" that remaineth for the people of God.  Great Controversy, page 252.3  Read entire Chapter 14

  The same trials have been experienced by men of God in ages past. Wycliffe, Huss, Luther, Tyndale, Baxter, Wesley, urged that all doctrines be brought to the test of the Bible and declared that they would renounce everything which it condemned. Against these men persecution raged with relentless fury; yet they ceased not to declare the truth. Different periods in the history of the church have each been marked by the development of some special truth, adapted to the necessities of God's people at that time. Every new truth has made its way against hatred and opposition; those who were blessed with its light were tempted and tried. The Lord gives a special truth for the people in an emergency. Who dare refuse to publish it? He commands His servants to present the last invitation of mercy to the world. They cannot remain silent, except at the peril of their souls. Christ's ambassadors have nothing to do with consequences. They must perform their duty and leave results with God.  Great Controversy, page 609.1  {4SP 427.2}

  There are many who think they can come to Jesus only in the way the child did who was possessed of the demon that threw him down and tore him as he was being led to the Saviour. You are not of the kind that should have any such conflicts and trials. Richard Baxter was distressed because he did not have such agonizing, humiliating views of himself as he thought he ought to have. But this was explained to his satisfaction at last and peace came to his heart.  {DG 147.2}
  "This aged world is not far from its end," said Melanchthon. Calvin bids Christians "not to hesitate, ardently desiring the day of Christ's coming as of all events most auspicious." . . . "The thoughts of the coming of the Lord," said Baxter, "are most sweet and joyful to me." "It is the work of faith and the character of His saints to love His appearing." . . .  {FLB 348.7}

"NOW I CAN SAY WITH THE POET:

          LORD, IT BELONGS NOT TO MY CARE,  WHETHER I DIE OR LIVE.
          IF LIFE BE LONG, I WILL BE GLAD  THAT I MAY LONG OBEY;
          IF SHORT, YET WHY SHOULD I BE SAD?  THIS WORLD MUST PASS AWAY.
          CHRIST LEADS ME THROUGH NO DARKER ROOMS,
                THAN HE WENT THROUGH BEFORE.
          WHOE'ER INTO HIS KINGDOM COMES, MUST ENTER BY HIS DOOR.
          COME, LORD, WHEN GRACE HAS MADE ME MEET THY BLESSED FACE TO SEE;
          FOR, IF THY WORK ON EARTH BE SWEET, WHAT MUST THY GLORY BE?
          I'LL GLADLY END MY SAD COMPLAINTS,  AND WEARY, SINFUL DAYS,
          TO JOIN WITH THE TRIUMPHANT SAINTS THAT SING JEHOVAH'S PRAISE.
          MY KNOWLEDGE OF THAT STATE IS SMALL,  MY EYE OF FAITH IS DIM;
          BUT 'TIS ENOUGH THAT CHRIST KNOWS ALL, AND I SHALL BE WITH HIM.
